We are in the midst of a global food crisis, as we all now well know. Much of it is to do with the price of fossil fuels, but perhaps more profoundly, it is a product of global warming paired with tragically failed global economic policies. At the bottom of the pile are poor, rural people in developing countries, struggling just to feed themselves and their own families on their own land. But we never hear from these people. Concern Worldwide thinks it is time we did, especially as the UK government revisits its international agricultural policies this year.

The National Labor Committee is on fire this holiday season, pointing out how much of our orgiastic seasonal consumer habits are propping up systems of human exploitation halfway around the world. This week, the NLC exposed that some of the cheerful holiday ornaments offered by Wal-Mart and other retailers were made by workers laboring under shocking conditions. So just how Christian are our holiday traditions? Keep reading ...

Here's the problem… The fair trade movement has pioneered an approach to international trade which supports small-scale farmers rather than ruins them, but can only have a limited impact while it is organised by the pioneers.
But then, what happens now that the big business, the large corporations and massive multinationals are getting into fair trade too – doesn't that threaten the original goal of the movement?

On Wednesday 2nd November, ahead of the sixth World Trade Organisation’s Ministerial Conference taking place in Hong Kong in December, Make Poverty History and the Trade Justice Movement are staging a mass lobby of Parliament to demand that the UK government supports the call to make poverty history by delivering trade justice - not free trade.

Conservatives are given to quoting Bible verses (usually out of context) to justify everything from discriminating against gay people to launching preemptive wars. Meanwhile, these same people are generally all for opening borders to "free trade" and favoring low prices over human rights. So here are a few Bible verses to make those people think: What would Jesus do about "free trade"?

This just in from the National Labor Committee: In an article for his school newspaper, a 17-year-old Catholic high school student in Utah revealed that the school uniforms he and his compatriots were required to wear were, in fact, sewn in a sweatshop in El Salvador. His article may well change the policies in his district.
Who will be the next high school journalism hero? I challenge students everywhere to follow this lead and find out where your school uniforms, sports uniforms, and sporting equipment is manufactured. Is your school supporting the victimization of women and children? You can stop it!

Have you ever bought clothes with the "Athletic Works" label at Wal-Mart, or picked up some "Tek Gear" duds from Kohls? If so, you have worn the hard work of Nicaraguans working in the textile factories owned by Taiwanese King Yong garment export company. Under the Central American Free Trade Agreement - which will be voted on by the US Congress and member countries later this year and next - the human rights abuses that are already occuring there will be encouraged and rewarded. Now is the time to speak up against this case-study in all that is wrong with CAFTA.

The other night I flew into San Francisco to celebrate and party with the trade justice group Global Exchange and some 400 other activists. We came together to honour one remarkable group, Via Campesina, and two remarkable people - Diane Wilson of Code Pink, and Harry Belafonte. It was electrifying to be in the room with so many people buzzing with such passion and hope.

Would you be willing to spend 1/4 cent more for your taco if you knew it meant hundreds of farmworkers could earn a living wage? Taco Bell doesn't think so, but I do. Oxfam America is mounting a powerful campaign to pressure Taco Bell into paying just one penny more per pound to tomato pickers in Florida, and they need your help.
